At Zipp Express in St. Louis, we hire local drivers to handle our final mile delivery, courier routes, White Glove Delivery, and NFO services. We’ve served as a local delivery and shipping company for better than thirty years. This city is our home and we’re proud of our community. We believe one of the best ways we can show that pride is by hiring locally.
Here are just a few of the reasons why we hire local drivers.
Why We Hire Local #1 – We are Invested in St. Louis
In 1989, Zipp Express had one car and one van we used to provide courier services to small businesses and individuals. In those days, our deliveries were limited to envelopes and small packages. The local community took a chance on us and it paid off for everyone. We wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for them.
Over the years, we expanded our services to include deliveries of furniture, appliances, and office equipment. We had several regular delivery routes in and around St. Louis. By 2000, we’d added trucks that were dock-high and able to transport larger freight. And by 2008, we’d integrated with other trucking companies so we could expand our delivery services to include final mile delivery and larger freight.
Thanks to the support of local businesses and individual customers, we continue to grow. In 2017, we expanded our storage capability to include a 41,000 sq ft climate-controlled warehouse. We now offer both short-term and long-term storage options. This means local businesses can save money by buying in bulk and storing large equipment out of the elements. And they can store expensive items like pharmaceuticals or shipments of jewelry in our highly secure 2000 sq ft cage.
These days, we have drivers available 24/7/365 days a year. Zipp Express dispatches them around the clock, using state-of-the-art software to make sure your deliveries are on time, every time.
At every turn, St. Louis embraced our growth and gave us more reasons to expand our services and our fleet. They invested in us, so we invested in them.
Why We Hire Local Drivers #2 – Locals know the city best
Zipp Express’s motto is “on time—every time.” We have regular routes that extend to within a 150-mile radius of St. Louis, as far West as Columbia, Missouri and points into Southern Illinois. Our drivers have access to all the newest mapping technologies, but we hire local drivers because there is no substitute for human know-how.
Local people are more likely to know where the parade routes are and when they’ll be in use. And when schools let out. And when rush hour traffic is going to be at its worst. Furthermore, they know all the alternative routes and the short cuts. They can anticipate and reroute around the workings of a busy city, including road construction. Locals know which of the older neighborhoods have narrow streets and which can be accessed via the interstate.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s one of our specialty crews making a white glove delivery to a hospital or a courier delivering time-sensitive documents such as the closing papers on a house. Zipp’s people are some of the most efficient drivers in the business because they know the city and the surrounding areas. And because many of our deliveries come with a same-day service guarantee, this really matters.
Zipp Express is located just one-mile west of I-270 off I-70, close to Lambert International airport. Our drivers make this run all the time. And because they live here, they know if they need to leave sooner because of the traffic at certain times of the day.
Why We Hire Local Drivers #3 – Locals Understand Other Locals
People like familiar faces. They like knowing the names of the people they work with and serve. It creates a sense of community, which is important in a big city like St. Louis.
Since our employees live in St. Louis, Zipp Express drivers and delivery crews are out in the community every day. They don’t just deliver shipments to the local businesses; they often shop there too. Members of of our crews that specialize in White Glove Delivery might deliver and set up the medical equipment that their neighbors use.
Local employees are connected to the people they serve and hold themselves to a high standard because of it. And they may know many of the people they deliver to. This makes doing their jobs easier.
Why We Hire Local Drivers #4 – We Aren’t Just Building a Business, We’re Building a Family
Zipp Express isn’t just a business. We’re family. And we hire local drivers because people who live here will stay longer. And that’s not just good economic sense; it’s good for our company.
Trustworthiness is important in this business. Our employees must pass extensive background tests before we hire them. They will handle everything from delivering payroll to transporting and setting up fragile office equipment.
We know our over-the-road and final mile drivers will deliver shipments on time and in the same condition they were in when loaded. When someone needs NFO service, we deliver on our promise to get their shipment to the airport quickly and on time. All Zipp Express drivers are TSA certified so they can make runs to the airport to pick up and deliver freight without waiting in long lines before getting to the terminal.
Locally hired employees stay longer, which means a lower turnover rate. This is good for us and for the community. Zipp Express invests a lot in our employees, providing regular training in the latest shipment and delivery practices. The Zipp Express driver you interact with will have hours of coaching and training behind them.
Employees who know one another well work best together. They compensate for each other’s weaknesses. And they know what to expect from the other person when they do a job together. This means they can focus on the job itself and give it their all.
